Do you know the difference between hiking and trekking? The sport is the same, the only difference depends on how long the activity lasts: the former is done in a day and the latter is more demanding and takes longer. This is the explanation give to us by Telemaco Murgia, the product manager of the new Gallura Highlands catalogue in whose pages you can find the true essence of a territory told by those who live it every day, not just during the summer months but all the year round when the community gets together to involve and welcome anyone looking for a more unusual pleasant holiday in the best way possible.
Let’s hear what Telemaco has to say.

- When did your passion for this sport start?
I have to say it is innate, genetically passed down through the generations of my family. I started trekking properly as a boy with the scouts and then deepened my passion with competitive activities (the Adventure Races) and expeditions all over the world. Over the past twenty years, I have turned this passion into my work.
- How many itineraries are there in Santa Teresa Gallura and which are they?
Santa Teresa offers a wide range of possible excursions for all types of walkers, from culturally-themed paths to more technical routes, all the way to more athletic disciplines such as coasteering. Moreover, Santa Teresa is also an access point to the Trekking degli Stazzi for those looking for longer, more demanding weekly walks.
- What is the difference between trekking and hiking?
It is basically the same sport though in North America, especially, there is a distinction between hiking and trekking
- What equipment should you bring on an excursion? What should you have in your backpack?
The equipment varies depending on the type of the route and the duration of the excursion. You should certainly not forget to pack first aid kits, a map and compass, and water and a device to call for help if necessary.
- Do you only organise excursions for groups of experts or can the uninitiated also take part in this sport?
Thanks to the wide range of routes each with its own characteristics, anyone looking to explore this territory can find themselves embarking on a satisfying experience, fully enjoying the silence and aromas of this fantastic land.
- Are there any structures in Santa Teresa Gallura equipped to welcome excursionists?
We have a number of trek-friendly structures and operators who have a personal passion for trekking.
- Can assistance be found if someone finds themselves in difficulty?
Of course! Even if you don’t necessarily need help, for us it is a pleasure to share our passion and this territory with those who, like us, love trekking. The Gallura is a safe place and even in its wildest, most barren corners you can access the necessary services and live this experience in tranquillity.
Only those who choose Santa Teresa Gallura for their holidays live intense emotions. The ideal time to book is in the spring or autumn: the climate is mild, the colours bright and the routes quiet. Guides and other enthusiasts of walks in the fresh air can offer a lot of support to those visiting the area for the first time.
